What can I say about Penny Reid, except that if you have not read one of her books you need to RUN not WALK to your nearest device and order yours today! Don’t worry I will wait….. ( Cue the Jeopardy theme song)….. ok, now that is out of the way let me wax poetic about Penny Reid for a moment.
I read a lot of romance novels, I guess that is why I started a blog about the books I have read… fancy that! Anyway, there are some authors that I would recommend to people who don’t normally read romance and Penny Reid is one of them. Her tag line is a “Smart Romance” and that is the prefect description of her books. They are smart and quirky and have very realistic emotions. Her heroines and heroes are all different but all work in awesome ways. Her books are steamy but not necessary explicit, she is a less is more kind of love scene writer. I have met her at two book signings and she is one of the most thoughtful authors I have met. She stays for hours meeting each fan and makes you feel like you could be best friends.
Beard Science is the third book in the Winston Brothers series which is a spin off of the Knitting in the City series. The series is set in a small town in Tennessee, think Stars Hallow the Smokey Mountains edition. Cletus Winston is the quirky Winston brother, he is known for being a bit odd and having some amazing one liners. Jennifer Sylvester is the reigning Banana Cake queen in the town and is not know for having any depth. A brief synopsis of the book is that Jennifer is in a bind and blackmails Cletus into helping her out. That is all that you are going to get!
What I love about this book is that whenever you THINK you know what is going to happen next, Penny surprises you. Jennifer is a character who is looking to grow and needs Cletus’s help to do it and in the process they fall in love. But this is not a story where all of the sudden the nerdy girl in the glasses get contacts and BAM the hero is in love! It is the story of two people who help each other grow individually and challenge each other all the while being true to themselves. I was a little worried that Jennifer’s character would not work with Cletus, he is know for stealing the show in the other books of the series. But Jennifer is the perfect balance to Cletus personality. You also get to meet other members of the Winston clan that adds an extra bit of awesome to the story. This book will make you laugh out loud, surprise you, let you escape to the Smokey Mountains and leave you wanting to read the rest of the series.
